Leveling:
First you have to understand the difference between leveling and upgrading. Leveling is done by achieving the designated amount of XP for a unit or leader to kick them up to the next level. So it takes all units 100 XP to get from level 1 to level 2. So one you have defeated enough enemies to get a unit to that amount of XP, then they automatically level up. Upgrading however is something only non-leader units can do. It is available to units that have reached levels 5, 7, 10, 15, 20, 22, 25, or 30. Upgrading can only be done in cities with the appropriate buildings in that city. Upgrading doesn’t cost anything in your own cities, however can cost gold or mana in cities that you don’t own. So for an example, if you have a Dwarf that has reached level 5, and you travel to a city that has a Barracks, you can upgrade your Dwarf to a Warrior, by paying any fees the city owner determines. This doesn’t mean that you have to upgrade your units. At any time when you feel like a unit is as far in upgrades as you want to place them, you can lock the unit. The unit continues to level as normal, however it is no longer eligible for upgrading. The benefit to this is that the unit gains more ability points per level.
As far as getting XP, it is pretty easy. If you defeat a unit, that unit give your XP. The amount of XP is determined by the strength of the unit. The higher the enemy units level, the more XP. Simple right. For all units the amount of XP given is broken down into the following formulas:
Level 0 units – 50 XP
Level 1 units – 100 XP
Level 5 and up units – 50* unit level XP
So if you defeat a Green Dragon, it is a Level 20 unit, which means it gives 1000 XP. You are probably wondering why there is no amount for levels, 2, 3, and 4. Since the abilities of units don’t change much from 1 until 4, there isn’t a change in the amount of XP given for those units. Keep in mind, once you hit a level with a unit or leader, the counter goes back to 0. Also, if a unit or leader gains enough XP to gain a new level, then they cannot gain any additional XP from the amount given no matter how much is left over.
Ability Points:
Every time a unit reaches a new level, they gain ability points. For most units it is 5 points. Leaders however get 25 points, and units that have been locked receive 15 points. These points can be distributed among any of the following abilities for each unit; HP, Strength, Stamina, Agility, Initiative, Wisdom, and Charisma. You cannot add more than 15 points per level to HP, or more than 5 points per level to any other stat.
Leaders:
Your leader is a little different from other units in that they cannot get upgraded. However to compensate, every time they gain a level they can select a new skill from the Skill List. The skills available depend on their achieved level, their race, and faction. At no time can a leader gain the same skill more than once. Once a Leader achieves level 30, they can no longer gain skills, so there will be about 20 skills that your leaders can’t earn from the skills lists. There are several Epic Skills that are available starting at level 30, including Immunities, and stuff like the Overflow skill.
