A professor told me once that the only requirements for being a writer is to think you have something important to say, and an ego that believes everyone should hear it. Well, thank you for taking this opportunity to stroke my ego. As a writer, I try to take every opportunity to work on my craft. It’s the only way I can move from the ranks of the under published masses of pseudo-writers to the pantheon on top of the Best Seller lists. Because of this I delved deeply into a handful of forum-based RPs out of college in an attempt to develop a writing style and get some critique from readers that I could try to respond to. However I was somewhat distraught to see that so many other people who were using these forums truly lacked any constructive writing skills. They were focused strictly on their character (or characters) and lacked any motivation to push beyond that. And while character development is critical in any good story, these beginning writers weren’t so much as developing a character as they were just trying to make them cool.
From my perspective, this is kind of sad. Writing is about so much more than just having an incredible character that can do anything. It is about conflict and resolution. About changing the world through idea and implied action. About making something grand on something as simple as a blank sheet of white paper. To watch these players write these little spurts of action was disheartening and I decided that I would work on doing something about it. Enter the Nevendaar RP.
It is based, somewhat obviously, on a set of PC games called Disciples II, Dark Prophecy. They are games that I enjoy as a fan of strategy RPs, and I what I think is a great foundation for a world. What says conflict and resolution like a war amongst gods? As such I beat out an idea where players could create their own characters that are forced to interact in ways beyond just the main character. Like so many of the best fantasy, sci-fi, and adventure novels, the stories here are about more than just one character. There is a protagonist, but there is also plenty of activity around those characters that players can write about to get them away from a tunnel-vision writing style.
What’s more, I see this RP as not being constrained by a storyline or dogma that prevents it from being fully explored by players. Players can develop their own plots, antagonists, conflicts, and victories. They aren’t bound by a world with too many rules, and have a foundation of a world with enough basis that they can spring off in several directions. All of this and the opportunity to react with a community. What a deal. I realize most of you aren’t looking for experience with writing, or perhaps anything more than just an opportunity to make a cool character. I just hope that experiences here will help branch you into new directions and new ideas whether you are trying to be a professional or this is your first time. Because unlike my professor, I think everyone should have the opportunity to be heard. Welcome and enjoy!
