The city of Abrissel towered over its inhabitants like a shepard over its minute flock. The great walls of the citadel were flanked by flying butresses carved in the likeness of angels that watched over the city with rapt attention. Joel's eye stared up at the granite work, enthralled at the workmanship that the Clans might even be jealous of. He was supposed to be looking for warriors in search of work, but the young archer was caught up in the majesty of the capitol to focus on the task at hand. He was caught up in an ornate stained glass window that depicted a young knight, garbed in green armor slaying a massive red dragon when Edwin touched his shoulder, startling the young man.
"Lords," Joel gasped, easing his heart out of his throat, "you startled the life out of me."
"Sorry about that," Edwin smiled, "any luck?"
"With what?" Joel frowed his face.
Edwin's face muct have showed the mirror of Joel's confusion, as the young archer's mind quickly reminded his mouth of the goal of the expedition. "Oh, the warriors. No. Um, nothing so far."
Edwin cocked an eyebrow, then nodded in resignation, "No luck for me either. Most of the knights in the city are already dedicated to either King Emry's forces, or are already apart of another city's defenses. The few that remained were either too disreputible, or too overpriced. One knight asked for a thousand gold."
Joel blinked in surprise. "And how much did Grant say he had?"
"About a hundred and fifty."
"Actually, its only sixty now." The two men turned to see Grant strolling up, with Maria and another woman in his wake. "Gentlemen, I'd like to introduce you to Erin Alderith."
"A woman?" Joel scoffed.
"Aye, that's right," Erin retorted with a scowl that dwarfed the archer's. She was attractive, though odd looking in an Imperial uniform that looked cumbersome on a woman's slender frame. Her fiery auburn hair was tied neatly in a bun, and she wore a dull plate of armor that was accented by the pike that was hefted in her slander hands. "You got a probl'm with tha'?" she drawled in a northern accent.
"Actually I do. Grant you can't be serious! First monks to protect Solace, and now a woman warrior?"
"Watch your tongue," Grant snapped, the congenial smile on his face replaced by a glower. "You seem to have a knack for questioning my command. If you have a problem with who I choose to hire, then you are welcome to stay here and barter for your own work. I however am returning to Solace, with ot without you. Erin comes highly recommended by a close friend, and I will not allow you to smart off like a jackass just because you don't like her gender."
Joel flashed an indignant stare that was matched by the summoner, then muttered, "I apologize. I was just concerned about her.. credentials..."
"Good," Grant inhaled, "then lets get back to Solace. I don't like to leave it with such little protection."
