This is the place where you can request a random battle for your party/units to face. If you are using your Pathfinding skill to request a location battle, please note it. These battles can take place anywhere within the Elven lands so you can feel free to request something more specific. Doesn't mean you'll get it, but you can always ask.

"Everyone ready?" Vaalyun asked, shifting his weight off of the trunk of the oak tree just outside the city that the party had agreed to meet at, "I added a few enchantments to the Warding Circle, nothing permanent, but it should last most of the time we're away. It'll give them a bit more protection, not to mention I didn't want to hear all about how defenseless the city was with all of us away."
Adamar smiled slightly, knowing that the Grovemancer's comment was simply in jest, "Yes well, I must admit I do feel slightly better after going over things with Gantar. He's made quite a bit of progress since I first started training him, and he wasn't half bad to start with. Still...it seems a bit odd to be leaving Myrthraheal so soon..."
"Soon?" Elora questioned, turning to look back at the three men behind her, "I've been around for a while now, and Myrthraheal was here long before I was."
"Yes, yes, the Myrthraheal College of Magic has been in that grove for ages. It had just been refurbished when Vaalyun received the appointment to take over the college. However, the city itself was just getting started when Vaalyun had me come in to help make sure it would be safe from outsiders. You showed up less than a week later."
"I guess that would explain all the construction..." Elora said softly, her voice trailing off slightly, "At least I think that's what it was I heard as I drifted in and out of sleep."
"Most likely," Vaalyun said, "I'm surprised you remember much from those few days, you were quite out of it."
"I never realized how new the whole town was. I had heard of Myrthraheal back when it was just a small college, I assumed it had developed over the years." Thallan said, looking over his shoulder at the now distant buildings.
"Nope, Vaalyun decided to turn it into a city and with my help Myrthraheal has been growing ever since," Adamar paused, turning towards Elora, "Technically Myrthraheal isn't finished yet, but then again, most cities never are truly finished. Even the greatest cities are still being improved. But we had just finished all of the initial construction, and I was hoping to have some time to go over the city's defenses before leaving."
"Don't worry old friend, Gantar will do fine, he's got the scouts to help him out. Not to mention, the Aviary's been finished for a while, I'm sure it won't be much longer until the first Griffin is fully trained." Vaalyun paused, holding up his hand to signal the party to stop, he continued, whispering, "We aren't alone any longer. We will fight our way out of this, but try to be diplomatic about it if at all possible. Elora, if you will."
While no weapons were drawn by the party, there was an instant change in their demeanor as each mentally prepared for whatever else was in the woods with them. While Vaalyun's eyes quickly scanned the woods in front of them, the air around Elora's hands begin to shimmer with the magic that was pouring forth from within her. The golden sparkles quickly spread out, some portion of it washing over each of the four elves, further readying them for battle. Of course, fighting was the last resort, but it never hurt to be prepared.
There was a rustling in the bushes, and then there was an explosion of leaves as a wild looking centaur burst forth, an old lance held skillfully in his muscular arm. "You aren't welcome in our forest!" The centaur roared out, as two slightly smaller creatures emerged from the brush as well. These elven creatures were slimmer than the centaur, however it was clear they were well built. Right below their taught stomach, a dark fur covered their skin all the way down to their hoofed feet and their swishing tails. Vaalyun could tell that there were at least two others with them, but he couldn't quite make out what they were, for they remained slightly in the brush.
"I'm warning you, leave now or face the consequences!" It was strange that the savage beast bore such close resemblance to Adamar, but at the same time, the minor differences added up. The way his scraggly hair was knotted up, the way his face and chest were smeared with dirt, the savage look in his eyes. It was clear that this centaur lived a completely different life than Adamar did, yet at the same time, it was also clear that it wasn't simply a wild animal that could be taken down without remorse.
"Surely these threats of yours are unnecessary," Vaalyun spoke calmly, hoping that his tone would help to soothe the beast, "These forests are our forests too, we mean them no harm. Nor do we mean you any harm. We are simply traveling through here, as I myself have done nearly every day."
"Get out of my home!" The centaur cried out, charging forwards, his lance pointed straight towards Vaalyun. Time seemed to slow down to Vaalyun as he quickly raised his hands, preparing a spell, while at the same time attempting to avoid the attack. Fortunately, Adamar had been prepared for just this kind of thing to happen, and before the wild centaur had halved the distance to the Grovemancer, Adamar's own lance parried away the attack.
While it wasn't enough to stop the charge all together, it was enough to give Vaalyun enough time to complete his spell. Vines shot up from the ground, ensnaring the centaur's legs, causing the mighty beast to stumble before finally holding him in place. Similar vines quickly crept up the faun' legs, holding them in place as well. "We don't wish to harm you." Vaalyun managed to keep his voice level, hiding how startled he had been by the attack.
"We don't wish to, but we will if we must," Adamar fiercely added, positioning himself between Vaalyun and the centaur, which was now struggling to break free of the vines.
With a bestial roar, the centaur spat towards Adamar, sneering harshly, "You traitor. At least the elves you travel with never belonged here. They've always been civilized. You were better than that once. Then you turned your back on your people to join the great life of the noble Elves." The centaur's tone had managed to adulterate the last part of his statement into an insult, as if living inside one of the cities would the lowest one could ever stoop down to.
"I'm not the traitor here, you are. We are all a part of the elven alliance regardless of our individual races, don't you see? It's about something bigger than being a centaur. It's about protecting everything we have from what's out there. Do you really think that if they come burning down our cities 'your' forest won't catch fire? We don't just protect one part of elven life, we protect all of it!"
The wild centaur, sneered, struggling against the vines, but did not respond to Adamar's heartfelt response. Behind the centaur, the two faun silently struggled against their own bindings, bending down to claw at the vines. Yet the two remaining creatures remained hidden, not even attempting to help their comrades.
With a loud snap, the first of the vines holding the centaur down broke, freeing one of back legs. "Once I'm free of your pathetic spell you are done for!"
"I would highly advise against that," Vaalyun spoke calmly, but at the same time began to focus on the glade magic he held within him, "While I would prefer working this out amiably, we won't hold back if you force us into a fight."
"And neither will I!" The centaur shouted out, his other back leg coming free as he slashed downwards with his lance, cutting the vines that held his front legs in place. The wild creature crouched down, lance readied, and then leapt forwards, the point of his weapon aimed straight for Vaalyun. The mage quickly sidestepped the attack, swinging his staff around to slam into the centaur's back.
"Nice to see you can hold your own in physical combat as well," Adamar said, smirking, "but perhaps I should take it from here." The noble centaur charged forwards, easily blocking the wild centaur's last minute attempt to stop the attack before unleashing his own attack, which successfully connected with the centaur's side.
While the two centaur's battled it out, Vaalyun turned his attention to the two faun, pleased to find that Thallan had already begun the battle, not waiting for the enemy to free itself. After all, why wait when it was already clear from the centaurs actions that the group was hostile. With the urging of the Adept's magic, brambles had worked their way out of the ground, wrapping around the woodland creatures. The brambles did little to hold the creatures in place, but rather dug painfully into their flesh.
Calling upon his magic once more, Vaalyun quickly added brambles of his own calling to the ones that had Thallan had unleashed upon the faun, making sure to target the creatures that had remained hidden in the woods as well. "Nice to see that centaur didn't get you," Thallan joked, then continued with a more serious tone, "It's nice to know you've got my back now." The two mages stood ready, watching their magic work together, although it was clear that one set of brambles was thicker and having a greater impact on the creatures.
However, the magic was far from enough to stop the creatures, which, now angrier than before, bounded towards the two mages, ready to draw blood. Fortunately for the teacher and his student, Elora had just unleashed another burst of glade magic, infusing them with enough alertness to easily outmaneuver the creatures, and strike back, though this time they struck out with physical attacks.
Vaalyun brought his staff up, striking the faun at its knees, bringing it to the ground, while Thallan quickly drew one of the knifes he kept under his cloak, slashing at the faun that had attacked him, the sharp blade easily drawing blood. The surprise of such a physical rebuff from the mages was enough to startle the faun, but didn't keep them from striking back. Slamming into the two mages, the creatures knocked them backwards, but the attack wasn't enough to break their concentration as the prepared to unleash their spells once again.
Suddenly, the two creatures that had remained hidden burst out of the brush, which Vaalyun recognized as nymphs. Knowing that their ability in combat was far from superior enough to take on two opponents at once, the mages quickly unleashed their spells; brambles burst forth from the ground once more, their thorns digging into the wild creatures.
The pain was evident in the expressions the two faun wore on their faces, but the pain was soon replaced by a fierce resolve to get back at the two mages that had summoned the thorny brambles. However, the pain from the spells was too much for the weaker nymphs, causing them to collapse on the ground, as the last bit of their life drained out of them. Before the mages could cast the spell for a third time, the faun had leapt into action, letting the pain fuel their anger rather than hinder their actions.
Acting smarter this time, the two faun both charged towards Vaalyun, rather than each taking on one of the mages. Their combined might was enough to knock Vaalyun to his knees as the Grovemancer desperately attempted to throw one off him, so that he would be able to move enough to make use of his staff. However, his attempts did little to dislodge the creatures, which had both prepared to beat the mage as they pinned him.
As they drew back their fists, both faun suddenly froze, then fell off of Vaalyun. Calmly, Thallan walked over to his teacher, helping him to his feet, and then bent down, removing his knives from the faun. After wiping off the blades on the grass, Thallan returned the knives to their holsters, and then remembered that Adamar had still been fighting the wild centaur the last time he had seen him. "Adamar!" Thallan had a frantic look in his face, hardly able to believe he had forgotten that the battle wasn't over yet, hoping he had reminded Vaalyun in time.
"...is fine," Vaalyun said, looking past Thallan to where the two centaurs stood, "Let us go though, just in case the tides somehow turn." The two mages, followed by the spiritess, quickly hurried over to stand by Adamar's side, as the centaur lancer stood over the wild beast, his lance inches away from the other lancer's throat.
"This ends now," Adamar said, breathing heavily, a sign of the battle that had just taken place. Other than his deepened breaths however, there was little to indicate that he had been in a fight. There were a few scratches here and there, but nothing that wouldn't heal soon.
"Yes, it does indeed end, but not like that," Vaalyun spoke calmly, placing his hand on Adamar's lance, lowering it until the tip was resting in soil. "It was indeed wrong of him to claim that these woods are his and his alone, for the woods belong to us as well. But it would be also wrong for you to kill him in cold blood. We only kill in the heat of battle, or to save the lives of innocents. Not like this. The battle is over, he has no strength left."
"But.."
"No buts, he is wounded and unable to harm us further, nor will he be able to follow us. If we kill him now, the other wild ones will only see a massacre. If we spare him, perhaps our kindness will be repaid later." Vaalyun turned to the wild centaur, "We will leave now, I believe some of the white flowers over there have some healing abilities, you will be fine. However, if you attack us again we will not be so kind the second time around. Spread the word of our compassion to your brethren, lest we have to fight and harm more of you. Let us pass in peace."
Vaalyun paused, raising his staff, "As much as I regret this, I can not risk that you are healthier than you appear and that you plan to follow us and attack us from behind when our guard is down. You will recover soon, and then be sure to find those flowers." With that, Vaalyun brought his staff down, sending the centaur into a state of unconsciousness.
